Book Blogger Hop 22/07

Book Blogger Hop

This weeks question from the Book Blogger Hop at crazy-for-books.com is:

What’s the ONE GENRE that you wish you could get into, but just can’t?

I really wish I could enjoy fantasy books. I love the idea of other worlds, made up cultures, travelling around in space, time travel; the imagination is limitless. But whenever I sit down to read a fantasy book I just get so lost; the complex back stories and character development along with the myriad of complex place names, locations and unpronounceable character names means I just really struggle when I do.

So I find that historical fiction is where I am the most comfortable. I get to live in another place or time but with a familiarity that allows me to get lost in the story rather than worry over the details.

  1. If I had to pick between fantasy and historical fiction, I would pick fantasy. Since last week's pie chart about where I get my books was so popular, I thought I'd share what types of books I do read. Please stop by to see which genres I don't typically read.

  2. I like fantasy although I don't read it as much as I used to. I do know what you mean though. I have a few friends who have the same problem with it.

I like historical fiction too but I have read maybe a handful. It's something I would like to read more of.

  3. New follower.

I'm totally with you on Fantasy and for much the same reason.

I love historical fiction but I guess I mostly read literary fiction.

    Love your blog!

  4. Hi, just hopping on by. I used to be very wary of fantasy for the same reasons but have started to find some books within the genre that I've really liked. I enjoy historical fiction but haven't read much lately. Have a great weekend. BTW new follower.

  5. I don't have a particular genre that I can't get into, but some books really shouldn't make it past manuscript!

Hope you can hop past the blog to say hi!

  6. Right? Stupid unpronounceable names.

I'm reading Slammerkin right now by Emma Donoghue. Never really been into the 18th c (it's usually 16th or 19th), but she's just an all-around awesome writer, so it's great. Huzzah for historical fiction!

    Following. In a non-creepy way.

  7. Hallo :)
New follower - it's difficult to find bloggers with interests more similar to mine! Though saying that, I adore fantasy. The reasons you struggle to get into it (apart from unpronounceable character names) are the same reasons I adore it. It's so different you can just completely lose yourself in it.

Historical fiction is a nice break ^^

  8. Stopping by from the hop. Yay! A fellow historical fiction junkie! I like the occasional fantasy book but even though the author may play a little history I feel like I've learned quite a bit reading HF. New follower :)

  10. Hey,

I have been reading a bit more fantasy recently. It took me a while to get into it but I'm enjoying some of the book now. It does really annoy me though when I can't pronounce the names!

    Happy Hopping

  11. I'm with you, at least when it comes to high fantasy. Except for LORD OF THE RINGS, I'm not usually too keen on dragons, elves, and that kind of thing. I do like light fantasy, especially YA.

Glad to have found you via the Hop!

  12. Fantasy is not one of my favorite genres, either. While I love the famous ones: Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Game of Thrones, all the rest start to sound exactly the same after awhile.

I'm reading historical fiction right now with The Paris Wife and it's wonderful! Had to plug in my nook or I'd still be reading it, but visiting blogs is another worthy pasttime. ;)
