Call the Midwife (Author Jennifer Worth)

Read It
Call the Midwife is the true story of the author working as a midwife in the East End of London in the 1950s. It is the first in a three part series of books which are quite possible my favourite I have read this year. Focused very heavily on the characters in her life, Jennifer Worth is a captivating story teller. Call the Midwife follows her journey as she lives in a convent as a trained midwife and practices in the war-scarred Dockland area of London. We could never imagine some of the conditions in which women had to gave birth in, and only 50 years ago. It really opens your eyes to an entire different way of life.

Living with an order of nuns who have been practising midwifery since the late 1980s allows Worth to not only explore the lives of the patients she meets but also the extraordinary women who have devoted their lives to helping others. A touching, funny and poignant story capturing a fascinating time in social history, this book is a must read for every woman.
