Book Blogger Hop 15/07

Book Blogger Hop

This weeks question from the Book Blogger Hop at crazy-for-books.com is:

How/Where do you get your books? Do you buy them or go to the library? Is there a certain website you use like paperbackswap?

I have two main sources for my books. I buy them second hand from local second hand book shops and I borrow them from friends, mainly through our book club.

Every now and then I'll also borrow from the library (these are mainly non-fiction books that are harder to find at second hand stores) or I buy them new if there is a good deal happening. Books here in New Zealand are notoriously expensive so if I really want a book I mainly buy online from overseas or from book sale events.

Most of the books in my collection at the moment have actually come from London. I was living there for a couple of years and stocked up on lots of books from second hand shops. I then shipped them all home as this was cheaper than buying them here in New Zealand (even second hand!). As I read them I will slowly trade them or sell them for new books as I like to keep an ever evolving collection.

  1. I can sympathise you with about the outrageous book prices. I'm from Australia and prices here are mostly insane.

    Here's my follow friday.

  3. Maybe you should set up a book swap or a 2nd hand book store like 1/2 Price Books here in the US. They buy books from readers to stock their shelves and then turn around and sell them for 1/2 price. (Just don't buy them for pennies and then turn around and sell them for 1/2 price like the 1/2 price bookstore does)

I LOVE their cooking section and their christian book area is really good too.

I thought I'd stop and say hi from the Book Blogger Hop. I don't think I've ever stopped by. I'll follow you on GFC and if you'd like to stop by Family Literacy and You - I'd love to see ya there. Tina "The book Lady"

  5. The price of books is definitely outrageous. One of the great things about my Kindle is the # of free books available.

  6. Prices in South Africa are just as crazy!
I can go see a movie 3 times for the price of a book... and movies are expensive too.

    Lovely blog you have here!

  8. I’m seeing a pattern of book acquisition here. After all, there are just so many places to get books and so many different ways to read them.

It’s hard to beat the library for price and selection but it’s even harder to beat the convenience of browsing BN or Amazon from a Nook or Kindle, hitting a button and reading the book you picked in about sixty seconds.

As usual, my answer to this week’s Book Blogger Hop question is all over the map. Hop on over and read my multipart answer – http://www.howardsherman.net

  10. Thanks for stopping by my blog! We're sure disadvantaged with the price of new books down in this part of the world, aren't we? I really wish I could find a good 2nd hand bookstore nearby but that is one thing my city doesn't really seem to have.

  12. Lauren - I haven't jumped into the world of the e-book. I just can't get past holding a physical book.

  13. I didn't realize books were so expensive in NZ! They aren't terribly cheap here in the US anymore either, but it's not too bad. I get most of mine from the library or used though, so that I can afford to read as much as I like (I couldn't afford to buy every interesting book at full price).
